Bungie is dropping Mid-Season 2 for Marathon on July 21, and with it comes the game’s first proper PvE mode: Vault Breaker, a roguelite built around the Cryo Archive. The catch — and it’s a significant one — is that the mode only runs until August 4, giving active players a limited window to get their runs in. Below — all confirmed changes and what they mean for active players.
Marathon Mid-Season 2: Vault Breaker и остальные изменения
What the update adds: confirmed mechanics and content
- Vault Breaker mode (July 21–August 4): A PvE roguelite set in Cryo Archive, available to solo runners, duos, or trios. You infil and work through increasingly harder vaults across multiple runs — no standard loadout, you enter using a unique sponsored kit tied to the mode.
- Vault Data currency: The new persistent reward for Vault Breaker runs. Spend it inside the new Vault Breaker Armory to upgrade your sponsored kit, or use it to buy items and gear outside of the mode.
- Implant iconography refresh: Another pass at making implant icons more immediately legible — aiming to help you loot and get on with things.
- Cradle evolution system: A new prestige-style mechanic in the Cradle that lets you prestige your stats, and also unlocks runner style shells as you progress.
- Assassin shell invisibility toggle: The assassin shell can now toggle his invisibility — a meaningful quality-of-life change for players running that shell style.
- Thief drone player highlighting: The thief’s drone highlighting players now gives it a clearer tactical role in both PvE and PvP contexts.
- Auto-equip for sponsored kits: A new toggle that automatically equips sponsored kits.
Why this matters: context for the changes
Vault Breaker is described as the shooter’s first proper, albeit experimental, PvE mode, and the limited time frame makes that framing feel honest rather than just marketing caution. The mode appears designed to test whether a co-op PvE loop can sit alongside Marathon’s extraction economy without disrupting it — Vault Data is the only reward that persists out of the mode.

The bigger signal for long-term players: there is apparently a full PvE mode coming in season 3, but no details were offered. Vault Breaker is clearly the data-gathering run before that. This pattern of limited-window testing is something other live-service games have leaned on too.
What this means for Marathon players
If you’ve been waiting for a lower-stakes way into Marathon’s combat, Vault Breaker is your window — solo entry is supported, so there’s no forced group coordination. Prioritise runs early in the window rather than assuming you’ll catch it in week two.
For economy-focused players, Vault Data is the priority reward to understand. It persists out of the mode, so even if the roguelite structure isn’t your preference, the currency has utility beyond Vault Breaker itself. The Cradle evolution system is also worth engaging with immediately if you’re approaching a stat ceiling — the prestige reset opens up runner style shells as you progress.
Players running the assassin or thief shells get the most direct mechanical upgrades this patch: the invisibility toggle and drone highlighting are both changes that alter how those shells function in real runs.

Marathon Mid-Season 2 arrives July 21 with Vault Breaker (PvE roguelite, Cryo Archive, solo/duo/trio) running until August 4, plus the Cradle evolution system, implant icon updates, and shell-specific feature updates. Don’t sit on this one — the window closes fast.
