Bethesda Game Studios announced an August 20 patch for The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Special Edition that would increase console mod storage limits and add Creations improvements. The studio said the update should not affect load orders, while advising players who had not used a save in some time to log into it as a precaution.
Skyrim Special Edition’s Creations update expands console storage
Post-release update notes report that mod storage increased to 15 GB on PlayStation 5 and Xbox. The same notes report that PlayStation 4 Creations storage expanded to approximately 16 GB, though download size may differ from the space used because of hardware limitations. PlayStation 4 storage partitions can also place a practical limit on the number of large Creations installed at once.
Creations menu and storefront changes
The update includes several changes to the Creations experience. Players can sort Creation categories by Most Popular, view bookmarked Creations marked as work in progress, and find instructions for reporting abusive or problematic mods on Creation Details pages.
- Creation bundling has been added to the Skyrim Creations menu.
- Storefront support now includes Creation box art at 3640 by 900 and 900 by 506, while older image sizes remain supported.
- Load-order improvements address failures when uploading or restoring load orders containing many mods or a mod that is no longer available on the Marketplace.
- Additional fixes cover search navigation, installed Creation version numbers, title formatting, store pricing displays, and Creations store loading efficiency.
Creation Kit additions and fixes
The Creation Kit received localisation export support, updated Search and Replace functionality, and new Select Form and Open Form Editor options. Multiple master loads are enabled by default, with configuration still available.
Creation uploads now support Bink files through an Extra Files browser. Supported file types include .nif, .dds, .bink, .wav, and .fuz files with embedded .wav files. Separately, eligible Skyrim Creations released through the Verified Creators program can use Achievement-Friendly options on Xbox and Trophy-Friendly options on PlayStation; updated Creations require a new game for that functionality.
What players should do
Players returning to an older save can follow Bethesda’s precautionary advice and log into that save before updating. The studio’s guidance is that the patch should not affect existing load orders, while the update notes also detail fixes intended to improve load-order uploading and restoration.
The new storage allowances give PlayStation 5 and Xbox players up to 15 GB for mods, while PlayStation 4 players have approximately 16 GB of Creations storage subject to platform-specific limitations. The accompanying Creations and Creation Kit changes also address browsing, uploads, load orders, and other parts of the modding workflow.
